The Madalorian has some distinctive and cool looking gloves. They are definitely the gloves of a man who gets his hands dirty and is a warrior. From the information we have, the gloves are actually made from two different pairs of gloves – a set of black gloves that have cuffs stitched to them, and a set of deerskin work gloves.
Here are links to Amazon for the ones that I used. These gloves have the cuffs and look really good. In the movie I think they may have taken other gloves and sewn on the cuffs. So the only thing these don’t have is the zig zag sewing machine pattern on the base of the cuff. You could cut the cuffs off and resew them if your hardcore. Last time I did a leather project that required a machine I killed my wife’s sewing machine. (I wouldn’t recommend doing this. I still hear about it years later.)
The first thing to do is make sure that these gloves fit. You don’t want the black gloves too tight. They need to have space for the deerskin gloves to fit inside. This is really important. Once you are happy with the fit, carefully cut off the fingers with a very sharp set of scissors. If they don’t cut the leather easily, stop and get a sharp pair. Cut them off as show in the photo above.
The deerskin work gloves should fit tight but comfortably. The very first thing I do with these is to put them on and go and stick my hands in the faucet under the water. Let them get nice and wet. Then I put them on and went outside, pulled some weeds, and worked in my garage cleaning up with the gloves on. My wife liked this part. When I was done and the gloves were dirty, I carefully took them off and put them in a place to dry. You want them to dry pretty quickly so they don’t get moldy, but not so quickly that they dry out the leather too much. Just put them out in a warm dry place.
Then you put on the deerskin work gloves on and then put your hand in the black gloves and pull them over. If you got the fit right the black gloves should go over the deer skin gloves and fit comfortably but tight. Both the deerskin and black leather in the gloves I used do stretch nicely giving a great fit.
The next step is adding velcro to the back of the glove so that you can put on the hand armor. The best way to do this is to sew the velcro on. With the movement of the hand, glue rarely holds well in this location. Using black thread and a strong needle, carefully sew the loops onto the back of the glove. Don’t put the hooks part on the glove, put the hooks on the hand armor.
(Photo with the wrong gauntlet, but I needed the other hand for the camera. The gauntlet and hand armor are also from an early prototype.)
Thats it. You just made The Mandalorian’s gloves. Go out and wear them. The more dirty and used they get the better they will look.
